The Land Where Shinty Is King

This CD forms part of the Badenoch and Strathspey Shinty Heritage Project, started by Newtonmore Camanachd Club in 2010 to record the extensive history of shinty in the area.

One of the aims was to gather together the many poems, songs and pipe tunes composed about local teams. Writing poetry about shinty has a long history in this part of the Highlands and to continue the tradition, a poetry competition was held in local schools. Over 250 children of all ages took part. Judge, Meg Bateman, was very impressed with the poems, both by their strength of expression and by the writers’ obvious affection for the game.
With a wealth of old and new material available, it was a natural extension of the project to produce a CD of shinty poems, songs and pipe tunes. Containing the oldest and newest shinty songs – from the early 1800s right up to the present day – all performed by local artistes.
