The Evolution of the Shinty Ball – From Peat to Precision

The shinty ball has evolved alongside the game itself, from improvised early materials to the carefully constructed designs used today. This evolution reflects not only changes in how the game is played, but also advances in materials, craftsmanship, and performance.
Understanding the development of the shinty ball offers a deeper insight into the history of the game and the demands placed on players at every level.
In the early days of shinty, players relied on resourcefulness and local materials to craft not just their camans, but their balls as well. There were no standardised rules, no mass-produced equipment, only ingenuity passed down through generations.
Balls were often carved from hardwood, with knots being a preferred choice due to their density, though not exactly forgiving if you found yourself on the receiving end. In other regions, materials varied depending on what was available, with each area developing its own approach to making a playable ball.
By the 1830s, the Badenoch region had developed a preference for a ball made from tightly twisted horsehair, creating a more durable, uniform, and perhaps slightly kinder projectile.
This humble beginning set the foundation for what would become a crucial, and often overlooked, part of the sport’s development. From handmade heritage to modern match-day standards, the shinty ball has undergone as much evolution as the caman itself.

From Horsehair to India Rubber: 19th Century Shinty Ball Innovation
As the sport of shinty grew in popularity and began to spread beyond the glens, so too did the variety of materials used to create the all-important ball. The 19th century marked a period of experimentation and transition, reflecting broader industrial and material advancements across Britain.
In December 1849, a remarkable match took place near Beaufort Castle, between Strathglass and the men of the Low Ground of the Aird. With forty men per side, the match was played in a best-of-three format, with Strathglass emerging victorious.
What makes this game historically significant is the use of specially-made India Rubber balls, a major departure from the traditional wooden, cork, or horsehair constructions of the time.
India Rubber, also known as natural rubber, is a material derived from the sap of trees native to South America and India. Its resilience, bounce, and weather resistance made it a valuable, albeit novel, choice for shinty ball construction at the time
By the 1880s, regional differences in shinty ball construction became more pronounced. In 1889, a telling moment came during a match against Brae Lochaber, when a team from Badenoch encountered a leather ball for the very first time.
The contrast was striking:
“Our ball, before then, was a very heavy one made with a big cork in the heart, and horsehair made into a thick twine stitched round it. It would be about twice the diameter of the leather ball and about three times heavier.”
This quote reveals just how localized equipment had remained, even as the game itself was beginning to move toward greater standardisation. The Badenoch ball, with its dense, hand-stitched construction, was a product of practicality, durability, and local material availability. The leather ball, meanwhile, signalled a shift toward lighter, faster-paced play, more uniform bounce, and eventually, broader acceptance.

Post-War Progress and the Push for Performance – 20th Century Advances
The aftermath of the First World War saw not only a return to sport but also a shift in how shinty equipment was made and perceived. With raw materials in short supply and the cost of living rising, even something as small as a ball became emblematic of wider social and economic change.
In the immediate post-war years, limbless soldiers were employed in the manufacturing of shinty balls, a poignant example of how the sport contributed to the recovery and reintegration of wounded veterans. But production came at a cost: the price of a ball had doubled from 2s 6d before the war to 5 shillings, placing added strain on clubs already short on funds.
Despite the noble efforts behind their creation, these post-war balls drew criticism. The quality was inconsistent, and in wet conditions, the leather absorbed moisture, making the ball heavier and harder to drive, a far cry from the crisp, long hitting admired in earlier decades.
Enter Major Roberts of the Cameron Highlanders, a key figure in modernising shinty ball design during this period. Seeing the problems with waterlogged leather, he set out to develop a better solution, and he succeeded.
His redesigned ball featured:
The new ball was tested extensively and proved highly satisfactory, offering players a return to fast, clean hitting regardless of conditions.
In 1920, a patent was granted for 16 years, and the sole manufacturing rights were secured by John Macpherson of The Sporting Stores, Inverness, a key turning point in the standardisation and commercialisation of the shinty ball.

As shinty developed into a more widely organised sport in the 20th century, the ball, once an improvised object of local invention, gradually became more regulated and standardised.
Between 1918 and 1940, shinty appeared in various military training guides. One such example, an army booklet titled Small Side Team Games, described the ball as:
“Hard rubber, slightly smaller than a hockey ball.”
This minimalist design reflects the practicality of wartime sports, favouring durability over tradition, and easy replication across units.
A much more detailed description comes from the Schools Camanachd Association, recorded in 1937, offering insight into both traditional and emerging manufacturing methods:
“Worsted ball – cork or paper core – wool from old socks or stockings sewed with string.
Leather-covered ball – cork core – covered with worsted and sewn with string, covered with leather and sewn with resined linen strings.
Circumference approximately 7½ to 8 inches.
Weight not to exceed 2¾ ounces.
When wet, the ball should be dried before reuse. To preserve the cover, apply dubbin, roast fat, or good shoe polish.”
This account reveals a blend of domestic craft and standard practice, showing just how personal and handmade the game remained, even in its organised forms.
In Games and Sports in the Services in India (1945), the shinty ball is again noted:
“Hard rubber, slightly smaller than a hockey ball.”
It’s a further nod to the game’s global footprint via military service, and again, practicality was the guiding principle.
The earliest ball specification from the Camanachd Association’s ‘Rules of Play’ (1948–49) reads:
“The ball to be played with shall consist of cork and worsted, with a covering of leather, and shall measure 7½ to 8 inches in circumference, and be of a weight of 2½ to 3½ ounces (70g – 99g).”
Now, the ball had moved from craft to code, and the path toward consistency and officialdom was set.
As standardisation took hold, the manufacture of shinty balls became a cottage industry. Most villages had a shoemaker who would craft balls using offcuts of leather, often as a side line to their main trade.
The most renowned of them all was John MacKellar of Tighnabruaich. Trained by his uncle, MacKellar was a skilled shoemaker who created custom footwear for the well-to-do, but he also quietly revolutionised the game with his handmade shinty balls.
By the 1960s, the “Tighnabruaich ball” had earned a reputation for:
Its performance outclassed most competitors, and orders quickly followed.
A questionnaire featured in the 1979 Shinty Yearbook shed light on ball availability and player preferences:
“The only good quality ball is a MacKellar of Tighnabruaich one. Yet many clubs, particularly in the north, cannot get hold of them.
Only 5 of our 18 respondents use Tighnabruaich balls. The rest use the Irish-made ‘All-Star’ variety, simply because it is all they can get.
Critics say the All-Star ball:
- Loses its whiteness quickly
- Becomes heavy and sponge-like within 15–20 minutes
- Is hard for spectators and goalkeepers to follow
- Frustrates young players learning the game”
Even into the late 20th century, access and quality remained uneven, and the reliability of a handmade Scottish ball was still considered top-tier, a testament to MacKellar’s craftsmanship and the lasting legacy of local makers.

By the mid-20th century, shinty ball production had shifted from a diverse landscape of village makers to a few key figures and suppliers. But with time, that landscape changed again, and not for the better.
In 1976, Macpherson’s Sporting Stores in Inverness, once the holder of the 1920 shinty ball patent and a key supplier, closed its doors. Just a few years later, in the 1980s, the passing of John MacKellar marked the end of an era for high-quality, handcrafted Scottish-made balls.
With no domestic ball makers left in operation, the supply of shinty balls became entirely dependent on imports, and the decline in quality was swift and noticeable.
Balls began to absorb water, lose shape, and become heavy, often resembling the poor-performing balls of the post-war years.
In wet weather, a standard imported ball would often fail to last a full 90-minute match, requiring constant replacements. It became common to see 5 or 6 balls used per game, not for tactical speed but out of sheer necessity.
And this wasn’t a short-term problem, the reliance on inconsistent imports, and the absence of a dedicated Scottish ball maker, would shape the game for more than 40 years.
Today’s shinty balls are designed for consistency, durability, and performance across all levels of the game.
By the 2015/16 season, as a former player and now the leading manufacturer of camans in Scotland, I felt a responsibility to examine another key part of the game, the shinty ball.
The quality had deteriorated so much over the decades that I wondered:
Was this just the way things were, or could something better be made?
All I had to guide me at first were the balls in circulation and a single line from the rulebook:
“The ball shall be spherical – the interior shall be cork and worsted and the outer cover shall be of leather or other approved material. The circumference of the ball shall not be more than 8 inches (20cms) and not less than 7½ inches (19cms). The weight of the ball, at the start of the game shall be not more than 3 ounces (85gms) nor less than 2½ ounces (70gms). The ball shall not be changed during the game unless authorised by the Referee.”
Not much had changed in over 70 years, aside from the weight range tightening from 70–99g down to 70–85g, and the introduction of “other approved materials” for the outer cover.
That was my starting point.
I set myself four clear objectives:
I began by weighing and dissecting the shinty balls currently in use. I submerged them in water for 8 hours, then weighed them again.
What I found was telling:
The first step was simple: bring back leather. This immediately improved appearance and durability, but it didn’t solve the problem, water still got in.
So I turned to the core.
Both had partial success, but still let in water over time.
Through collaboration with our manufacturer, I discovered a new material, a rubber-like, 100% waterproof core that could be precision-moulded into a perfect sphere.
This innovation meant:
We tested it again, this time submerged in water for 24 hours.
After years of inconsistency and frustration, this was a ball that:

In September 2016, after more than a year of research, development, and hands-on testing, I formally wrote to the Camanachd Association. My proposal was simple: to present the newly developed Tanera PRO Ball, a modern, durable, waterproof alternative to the failing imports, and to seek approval for it to become the official ball used in cup and league competitions.
What followed was a frustrating example of missed opportunity.
Eleven weeks later, I received a reply. Not to discuss the ball. Not to arrange a meeting. But to inform me that my email had never been circulated, and in the meantime, the Association had signed an agreement with their kit supplier partners for a very similar deal to the one I had proposed.
It was a massive setback, not just personally, but for the future of a product developed to raise the standard of the sport. What followed were months of bureaucratic delays, changed byelaws, and hurdles thrown in the way of progress.
One of the biggest obstacles was a subtle but important revision to Byelaw 1.3, which now read:
“The ball shall be spherical – the interior shall be cork and worsted or other approved material.”
Though on the surface it appeared inclusive, this wording allowed for interpretation and slowed the acceptance of innovation.
After ongoing discussions and continued testing, the Tanera PRO Ball was finally approved by the Camanachd Association in December 2017 for use in all competitions.
It marked the end of a long and difficult chapter, but the beginning of something more exciting: the opportunity to think not just about performance and durability, but design, visibility, and identity.
With functionality now perfected, I turned my attention to the appearance of the ball. If this was to be the new standard in shinty, could it also be made easier to follow, more recognisable, and even visually iconic?
This led me to research how other sports had approached visibility and colour. Surprisingly, it was an article about tennis that offered the spark of inspiration.
For nearly a century, tennis balls were either white or black. But with the rise of colour television, visibility became a problem. It was none other than Sir David Attenborough, working at the BBC, who pushed for the change to optic yellow in 1972.
It took Wimbledon another 14 years to fully adopt it, but when they did, the difference was undeniable, and it set a precedent for countless other sports.
Since then, football, hockey, baseball, volleyball, and golf have all embraced visibility-focused design changes, not just for players and officials, but for spectators and media coverage too.
So the question became:
Could shinty benefit from the same shift?

A Vision for the Future – Innovation Rooted in Tradition
Just before the world paused during lockdown, we were ready to launch something new: the optic PRO shinty ball. After years of development and testing, we’d created a ball that not only met performance standards but stood out – quite literally – on the pitch.
To improve visibility in Scotland’s ever-changing light and weather, we introduced luminous orange dots, adding contrast both in the air and on the ground. The feedback was immediate, players and spectators could track the ball more easily, especially in fast-paced, wet, or low-light conditions.

After more than 40 years of relying on imports, the goal is to return shinty ball-making to its roots, reviving a craft that once lived in the backrooms of shoemakers and in the hands of Highland tinkerers. It’s not just about production; it’s about heritage, jobs, and reclaiming a part of our sporting identity.
