Denis Swanson Personality Parade 1974

Club: Inverness

Age: 49 Years

Number of years with present club: 33 years

Team Position: Wing centre, buckshee forward, finally goal keeper.

Where did you first play shinty?

At Inverness High School then for Inverness. I had my first game for Inverness against Fort Augustus at the Fort at the age of 16.

What was your first memorable game?

As Captain of Inverness in 1951, the first year of the Torlundy Cup, scoring the winning goal from centre field against Oban Celtic in the final and receiving the cup from Mr. Hobbs of Inverlochy Castle, the donor. We played two games that day to qualify for the final.

Who is the best opponent you have faced?

This is a difficult one but as wing centre probably George Ralph, Newtonmore, and as defender Alastair Tyronney of Lovat.

What was your most disappointing moment in Shinty?

Missing the Camanachd Cup final at Glasgow in 1952 through injury (broken jaw) received in the semi-final at Fort William v. Newtonmore. Inverness won the cup for the first time ever beating Oban Celtic 3 – 2. However, I got my winner’s medal despite not being able to help my team-mates in their great final victory.

What changes do you feel are required to improve the game?

(1) A proper close season as in football.

(2) An open draw for the Camanachd Cup from round 1.

(3) Well organised show games during the tourist season.

Who do you consider is the most promising young player that you have played against this season?

Colin Mackenzie, Steathglass shinty club.

What are your other sporting activities and hobbies?

Football and a little golf.

Have you any unfulfilled ambitions in shinty?

I have enjoyed my many years in shinty with Inverness both as a player and as a referee and I have had my fair share of honours. I would have liked to have refereed a Camanachd Cup Final.
